Diego from Puerto Rico
1.Tell us a bit about yourself
Hi, my name is Diego, i’m from Puerto Rico. I am currently studying in the University of Navarra’s Law School and my minor is Anglo American law.
2.Why UNAV?
I selected University of Navarra because it is number one among all of the private universities in Spain concerning employee reputation. It is number thirty seven internationally concerning the same thing and over all it is an excellent private university with a lot of amazing resources and many internationally recognized professors. I am extremely satisfied with my decision.
3.What were your expectations when coming and where they fulfilled?
When I applied here I thought that there would be a lot of international diversity, people from different countries (especially Latin America) and so far i’ve met people from Guatemala, El Salvador, the USA, Mexico even Luxembourg! My expectations were definitely fulfilled.
4.What do you wish you had known before coming?
I feel like I underestimated the cold here in Pamplona because when you come to spain, especially someone from the Americas, you think of a place with sunny beaches where it’s not that cold but it's crazy because the temperatures here sometimes feel as if someone is sticking a block of ice on my face and that is crazy. I wish I would’ve bought more winter clothes!
5.What has been your biggest impact since arriving?
I would say the the quality of the education is something super excellent and that the students that I study with are all super well prepared and are all very erudite because most back where i’m from students weren’t as dedicated . I’m not necessarily speaking about the Spanish people, this also includes people from other countries. I think UNAV attracts excellent students regardless of the country they come from.
6.What was your major setback when applying?
As an international student, when applying to this university, you have to take into consideration the documentation that you have to take in because it’s not exactly the most easy thing to apply to a different country. Especially in my situation being a US citizen being in an island that is technically not a part of the US. So I had to go to different government offices and it was very complicated.
7.What are three essential tips you would give newcomers?
-
Bring lots of winter clothes
-
Do not underestimate your classes, most of the classes evaluate on the final test
-
Make as many friends as possible
8. What are some outside sources that have helped you in your classes?
I would usually just google what i’m studying and google would give me many websites that could help me study. Sometimes books help me too. Any other material has been provided to me by my professors.
9. What are some expectations the career had such as the amount of time it consumes, the projects or other things?
As a law students you can expect to read many things every day and if you don't you, you are either tremendously good at memorizing things in class or you are probably going to fail your classes. You also have to things analytically and view cases from different point of view and trains of thought.
